Bernake makes sense

I have always loved the study of economics recently this is all I have been reading. While most of the concepts were somewhere in my head, it took a while for them to come back to me.

However, validation came to me listening to Ben Bernanke this morning, his talk was lucid and his economic theory makes sense in fact often through his testimony, I felt as if he is a professor explaining economic concept to the congress men and women without being condescending like a regular prof.

Wonder if Greenspan will make sense?

Talking about How to Change the World: Ten Questions With Michael Raynor

This is something new, that I will be doing with my blog now, linking to other interesting blogs that i subscribe to and read ona regular basis. And adding my commentary.

Quote

How to Change the World: Ten Questions With Michael Raynor

By contrast, Microsoft built a series of strategic options that positioned the company for success under a variety of different outcomes. Microsoft had what turned out to be a better strategy only because it didn’t commit itself to a single strategy. For example, when IBM began aggressively creating a competitor to MS-DOS and Windows, OS/2, Microsoft collaborated with IBM. The Windows development effort is evidence of Microsoft’s belief in GUI OS’s, but Microsoft was also getting a foothold in applications development for GUI-based systems by writing Excel and Word for...Apple! Corporate customers seemed to think that UNIX had a promising future, and so Microsoft was investing in UNIX too even as it released new versions of the by-then venerable menu-driven MS-DOS.

Shola's Commentary:

This tells me that what Microsoft will do about our current threats like Google and new quests like unified communications is deeply understnad the strategy of the current players and come up with a strategy that will enable us to win, irrespective of the randomness factors i.e. upredictable future and external shock.

Let's call a spade a spade

Some people are very pragmatic by nature. However, pragmatism is a viewpoint.
Realism is seeing something for what it really is, without applying any value judgement. The question is, is that even possible? How can you prove that there has been no value judgement applied, when the process of proving anything is biased by the value judgement of the person executing the proof.
By nature, humans see what we want to see and not necessary what is there. Feelings are very hard to measure and mere observation is often influence temporal feelings. The question is what is an objective measure?
How do you decide if the phenomenon that you are observing is really the way that you are seeing it. If you look through the lens of others, who is to say that that is not another disjointed view, if you layer views from multiple observers, what if the sum of the total is wrong. The wisdom of the crowd, you may be tempted to argue, however there have been many instances where it is proven that the crowd is often wrong. What if, the observation of this phenomenon is one of those instances?

Tooth Extraction gone Bad

I recently had a tooth extracted. It has been a week of hell, the amount of pain I am feeling is astounding. Sleep has been an exercise in pain and my latest diagnosis is a dry socket. Dry socket is essentially an exposed nerve and bone.. OMG! this pain is killing me!!!!

How come the denstists don't tell you about this complication until afterwards, my advice -- don't have extractions unless you ABSOLUTELY have to.

Random Thoughts

Why would anyone need to drive a ferari?
If you do, why would you want to drive one everyday??

Thinking... How do we learn, is a better student a better thinker, is it a function of IQ?
And as someone I love so much will say, how does this translate into dollars and cents?

For the pics from our traditional shindig, check it out here....

Change gonna Come

A Change Is Gonna Come
Sam Cooke
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh, and like that river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh yes it is

It's been too hard living and I'm afraid to die
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh yes it is

I go to the movies and I go around in town
Everybody there keeps telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh yes it is

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother, please
But he just winds up, knocking me
Back down on my knees

Sometimes I thought I wouldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh yes it is

Doing your best work

I was reading somewhere recently, that if you can still go in to work, and do a terrific job, just because then you are not burnt out. However, if you are not doing terrific work everyday, you may simply be demotivated or lazy. Being demotivated is not good for you or the cfirm. So people, for you own sake -- check from time to time to make sure you are motivated and doing your best work. It is in your best interest to be in a place where you can do your best work.

So doing one best work, requires that one know what that is - for me it is doing something that although tough, I enjoy and I can take delibrate steps in getting better at. ( I wish I could say it something like making a ton of money, but honestly, it is not -- how sad :(  )

What is your best work?

Charity begins at home

It is actually very easy to have an overdeveloped sense of self, and where exactly one sits in the order of the world. As humans, because of out limited daily experiences we tend to forget that there are 6 billions other people in the world. How many of those does our actions or thoughts touch. How many of these other 6 billion inhabitants of the planet, gives a hoot.

However, if one is going to make a difference, any sort of difference, charity has to begin at home.

For Nigerians that want to make a difference on the world stage, as an example, a critical measurement factor is what impact are you having on Nigeria - what is different because you a Nigerian. And for someone wanting to make a difference in Nigeria, the country what difference have you made in you own state. Hence thinking in terms of these concentric circles until you get to the smallest unit. Self, Spouse, Immmediate family, Extended family, Immediate community, and so on and so forth.

This is not to be construed that you have to make an impact at every level, because I can think of exceptions to that.

Anyways, I met Dr Chudi Nduaka who I think is doing a great job with his non-profit, Africa Education Initiative, check 'em out.

Investment Challenge

The CNBC investment challenge is about to start again, march 5th 2007 for 10 weeks, the way I see it is, it is a goood way to learn by using play money to invest. Do I really have a chance of winning? I dont think so, but I think it is an opportunity to look at the things I will be learning in the light of how they relate to the stock market.

Nigeria - I was watching an informercial today. Yes informercial, on the the worlds greatesttreasury of health secrets.
The whole idea is that there are natural supplements, that are more effective that traditional medicine from the big pharma.
My perspective is that this is one of those solutions to America's busted healthcare system. But based on innovators dilemma, I think where these types of ideas actually has the greatest currency is in the developing world. These are the places where people can simply not afford the medicine peddled by this big pharma, where traditional remedies will find a natural audience all we need is to connect it with scientific methods and since our doctors are not doing this, lets take the research being done in this great universities in the US, Australia and Germany and apply it. In fact, we could learn a lot from the chinese and japanese in this regard as well.

This whole concept of course could be expanded into other major areas of what the people need.
Housing -- use mud and other readily available materials to build houses that meet in fact exceed current standards - BASF is already doing this research.
Health - use alternative medicine
Energy - think solar, think alternative energy like ethanol (the big players like BP is already doing this research)

In fact, you could go down the list of Maslow Hierarchy of needs and you will find answers.

The next challenge

I have decided to take on another challenge. An adventure in learning, I  think I generally do school well....
So I have decided to take the CFA exam, in the next few months I will be busy, however, I still want to blog about this experience.
However considering the nature of the things I may be blogging about.. I may at any point take this blog semi private, meaning you'll have to be in my IM list to see it.... Oh well.

More on the CFA -- it is actually cool, and unlike B-School, you actually have to master the darn materials and Thank God, there is no operations or management science or other crap that I don't like. Although there is ethics -- wished I pay more attnetion, however, that was the easiest of them all in that first year.

Wanna know what i'll be learning? Check out the picture

Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday is when a lot of people will watch millionaires bash each other the game of football.

For what?
Games or sport or athletics whatever you want to call it is good for the players because it supposed to be a way of keeping fit and help the physical human condition. Spectator sports, OK lets say I can see the upside of cheering for your community, you school, your city, whatever you have a certain sense of allegiance to, against another school - but need it descend to a state of rivalry simply based on the sport itself? I don't think so.

Freedom
Given the recent loosing track by the team i support, I am coming to the conclusion that, as a non player these games are actually irrelevant to me, other than self identity, and social discourse.
Identity I can get by watching the game, semi disspassionately when I have time. And for social discourse, ESPN review will do, and this I can catch from a 1/2 hour tivo session.

Well this is it, the end of my fandom! (is that a word?)
