    What is Business?

How many people do you know, who will like to be in business or be a business person? In fact most people already are, they often just don;t know it.
Businesses are organization that manages resources to achieve objectives.
Organizations - large or small, simple or complex, for profit or non-profit, single or double bottom line focused.
Objectives - explicit or implicit, financial or non financial
Management - is an integral part of every businesses - the process of acquiring, allocation and control
Resources - are scarce includes people, money, time, hard assets, soft assets including reputation etc.

From this definition, most organizations are a business in one form or the other including for example your church, school or even household in some sense.

Businesses have different structures, goals, means and results but they all share common economic, financial and success factors, in addition they all operate in a similar environment, influenced by regulators and other external factors.
Types of business structures include - public or private, profit or non profit, established or startup, diversified or focused, product or services, high tech or not, domestic or international. Thier structure in turn determines a lot about the businesses' nature and strategy.

    The Lucifer Effect

I just have to post this because reading it has a profound effect on me.

    Key highlights:
Dr. Zimbardo conducted the (in)famous Stanford Prison Experiment in the summer of 1971. He recently published a book called The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil in which he discusses the Stanford Prison Experiment, its relevance to Abu Ghraib, and the “banality of heroism.”

My book analyzes lesser human transformations of ordinary, good people as they are seduced by a set of situational forces to take the first steps down evil’s slippery slope.

Question: How would you re-engineer the “system” to prevent a reoccurrence?

Answer: Such abuses do not occur where there is responsible leadership; where commanders and leaders of all institutions make crystal clear that they will not tolerate doing harm; that personal dignity will always be respected; that the rules of engagement will be known by all; that everyone is ultimately personally responsible for their actions; and that any violations of such protocol will be meet with public censure and punishment.

Question: Are people inherently and consistently good or bad?

Answer: I begin my book with John Milton’s classic statement about the power of the human mind, that it is its own place, and can “make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.” I follow with a psychological celebration of the mind’s infinite capacity to make any of us villains or heroes by enabling us to be caring or indifferent, selfless of selfish, creative or destructive.

People are not born evil, but rather with survival talents, and remarkable mental templates to be anything imaginable — just as infants readily learn to speak and understand any of a thousand languages in an instant in their development. We get a push from nature in various directions, such as being more inhibited or bold, but who we become is ultimately a complex process of cultural, historical, religious, economic and political experiences in familial and other institutional settings.

The “banality of heroism” describes ordinary people who engage in extraordinary deeds of service to humanity—in particular, usually once- in- a lifetime situational setting. Like those doing monstrous deeds that look “terrifying normal,” these ordinary heroes look “delightfully normal.”

So I argue that the very same situation that can inflame the “hostile imagination” in those who become perpetrators of evil can inspire the “heroic imagination” for the first time in any of us. To become a hero involves only two steps on humanity’s path:

    • One must act; moving away from the passivity of the mass of silent observers of evil or threats to life by somehow being catalyzed into action in that setting.

    • That action is taken on behalf of others; it is a socio-centric act against the evolutionary imperative of being ego-centric, of not taking risks or putting those precious genes in harm’s way.

I am so done with American Idol. Once Sanjaya was voted off, that is it for me. All I want to do now is relive that wonderful Besame Mucho performance of his on youtube.

    Shola on Marketing

It is interesting to me that in blogging, I hardly ever blog about my professional or academic interests. Economics I do blog about in a tangential sort of way. But not in the detailed academic way in which it piques my interest.
One reason for not doing this is because, I don't want to compromise my employers information and what I am learning at work. However, after three years as a marketing professional, I think it is time that I am able to seperate the generic applicable anywhere skills from the confidential information of my employer.
In addition, I will take the time to read up on our blogging policy (seeing that blogging is mainstream now) and I will blog more on my academic passions.

The following is what you can expect to see me blog about  in Marketing & Strategy--

What would you do? if confronted by Mr Cho

First let me say that I feel for the families of the people who died in the VIrginia Tech shooting and other strategies. I am sensitive to this things etc. however, some of the things that follows may affect some readers' sensibilities and for that I apologize.

I have always imagined, what will I do if I was on a plane and a hijacker tries to take it, or if I was in French class, when Mr Cho, decides to shoot up the place.
And only one answer occurs to me, I will attack the person. Don't get me wrong, I don't think I am brave, in fact, I probably will be scared shitless. However given no choice and believe me, I will look for every opportunity to run, I will attack viciously with intention to kill, maim or at least disable.
One of the photographs of Cho sent to NBC News
Looking at the pictures and notes, from that crazy guy, the one thing he didn't think of, is the possiblilty of someone attacking him. He was sure, the gun was enough edge and that most people will cower in the face of a gun.

Hey, when is your time to go, it is your time to go, death is death. I think I am more afraid of long continuos pain than a sharp quick death. The dead are luckier than the living, they don't have to deal with the issues of life. Grieving is not for the dead, it is for the selfishness of the living.

The brave will die, so will the coward
The good will die, so will the bad
The once sure date we all have is with death

Ok, quick - confess you sins and ask for Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
    Good.
Now, that you are assured of heaven.
Go and live your life, without fear of death, God is in control.

    Rules for a Successful Life

.  Treat every individual you meet with respect and kindness.

    2.  When individuals treat you with unkindness or lack of respect, reread rule #1.

    3.  Help as many people as you can, in as many ways as you can, for as long as you can.

    4.  If you can't say something good about someone, say nothing about that person at all.

    5.  Love your work. People who are paid more are those who work more for more than they are paid.

    6.  Be frugal. Save for the rainy day because rainy days always occur. What you have will be determined more by what you save than what you earn.

    7.  Make difficult decisions based on long-term effects rather than immediate gratification. Live to learn; learn to live.

    8.  Eat healthy and exercise regularly. You'll live longer, spend less and be happier.

    9.  Lasting success is derived from finding out what God wants you to do and then doing it.

    10. Love conquers everything else.

    Grow some Balls

There is not a lot of better ways to learn about human nature in general and your own nature than to immerse yourself in an environment of risks and temptation.
It brings out the best and the worst in all of us. Recently been in such an environment, and I learnt a lot that I want to capture in this blog.
There are two ways to be successful (not that there at not others or a combination of both) but these two is clear to me.
    1. Slow and Steady
These are the guys that set a goal, are calculating and focused, however they are not in a rush and feel time is their friend. They'd rather simply be consistent. They are base hitters, they play offense and defense equally well but are not particularly spectacular at one or the other they simply manage to have great stats.
    2. Stike for the fences
These are the guys that are ALWAYS trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark, they often strikeout, but that is fine the homeruns make all the strikeouts well worth it. These are the obvious risk takers.
On the other hand most people are sort of kinda of middle of the road on these strategies.
The one similarities between the two success strategies, these people have BALLS. They stick to thier guns. In business, these leads to certain qualities that I can sort of identify consistently in both groups now.

Action Orientation - they'd rather be doing something rather than talk about it
Risk taking - one group take risk with task the other take risk with time,  but don't mistake it both groups are risk takers
Giving - similarly but style believe in outflow, outflow leads to inflow. One will give generously when they have an homerun, while others give consistently over time.
Passion - both groups have passion, one group has the steely resolve kind of passion, quiet but stubborn. While the others are more like latin lovers, noisy, loud, confident/cocky or even garrulous, however even when they are down they are not out because of their passion.
No Fear - Both groups fear less than most people. And even when they have something to be afraid of, they just use the emotion in a positive way.
Bullshitters with BullShit radars - these guys can be so full of it sometimes, however they often can read through crap, when it is thrown back at them.
Take advantage - both groups often always take advantage of  opportunities, however they evaluate advantages consistent with their strategy.

Talking about BBC NEWS | In pictures: Nigerian barber, Dreams

    Quote

BBC NEWS | In pictures: Nigerian barber, Dreams

I feel a strong sense of empathy with this dude. His life is interesting on many levels. Yet this is the plight of most Nigerians, the unseen and the unspoken for.

Subtract the elites from Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and other major cities, and the middle class of yester years, who scions are now flung all over the cities of western societies. This is the reality of Nigeria, how do one even go about fixing this situation.

    Stop Learning, Start Dying

First let me ramble and rant - what's up with the women of the Northwest!
I was in 2 banks today and I work in a marketing organization - most (not all) the women dressed like tom boys - everything from Tiva, to pullover jackets, of course jeans and sandals etc.
Dang, I had a wish I am in New York moment, at least looking at the beautiful women, makes your day go better.

I honestly believe one should always keep on learning, and that once you stop learning, you start calcifying. For me, the things I want to work on now is of course the CFA exam and after that work on English.

    Naija Blogs Too

Somehow, the night turns into a full blown insomnia, but I am loving it! Exploring the minds of the naija bloggers.

OK - this one is funny, try to do s google map --> directions --> New York to London
Only one actually password protect her blog http://confessionsofnneka.blogspot.com - although other than talking about men, I dont really think she has anything controversial to say.
Anyhoo, other cool ones I like include:

Of course, the naija women had the more interesting stories, jist more like it - and not suprising the usual suspects are the topic of conversation.
Interestingly though, these women seems a lot more connected to Naija, and the ones in Naija seems to know a lot about what is going on outside it. These guys are all well connected and you can link from one of the main hub sites to the rest.

All in all, ver entertaining and well worth the sleepless night and 1 gallon of coffee tomorrow.

    Naija Blogs and Sundry Thoughts

The way I try to keep up with what is going on in Nigeria is through two key websites, NigeriaWorld and Nigerian Village Square. In addition, I try and browse through Naija bloggers, I especially like non Nigerians living in Nigeria, because I want to know what the country is like from other people's perspective. Some that I like include:
Cool blogs that a niche enough for me to want to read all the time don't blog often enough. Like those above and my friend T

Happy Easter everyone, it is easter weekend, the weather was awesome here in Seattle and despite pangs of extreme loneliness, I still happen to have a wonderful weekend.

Studying accounting diversity in the world mixed with some options pricing is extremely humbling. The key feelings, I am left with are, there a 6 billion people in the world and most of us are to one extent or the other in a rat race, what makes me or anyone else feel special?
There are 6 billion people for Gods sake! And that is a really dynamic population people, for example how may people die today? How many were born today?

BTW - sometimes this weekend I got a twitter account. You can see my timeline here.
Twitter is cool and actively talked about in the blogs I subscribe to, it is a way of tracking what an account holder is up to. Well if you are interested you can track me, but I suspect since I don't have any friends, I will soon be bored and it will go unupdated...we'll see :)

    Ordinary People

    "Ordinary People" - John Legend

    [Verse 1]

Girl im in love with you
    This ain't the honeymoon
    Past the infatuation phase
Right in the thick of love
At times we get sick of love
It seems like we argue everyday

    [Bridge]

    I know i misbehaved
    And you made your mistakes
And we both still got room left to grow
    And though love sometimes hurts
    I still put you first
And we'll make this thing work
But I think we should take it slow

    [Chorus]

    We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
    Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow

    [Verse 2]

    This ain't a movie no
    No fairy tale conclusion ya'll
    It gets more confusing everyday
    Sometimes it's heaven sent
Then we head back to hell again
We kiss then we make up on the way

    [Bridge]

    I hang up you call
    We rise and we fall
And we feel like just walking away
    As our love advances
    We take second chances
    Though it's not a fantasy
I Still want you to stay

    [Chorus]

    We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
    Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow

    [Verse 3]

    Take it slow
    Maybe we'll live and learn
    Maybe we'll crash and burn
Maybe you'll stay, maybe you'll leave,
    maybe you'll return
    Maybe another fight
    Maybe we won't survive
    But maybe we'll grow
We never know baby youuuu and I

    [Chorus]

    We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
    Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Heyyy)
    We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
    Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow
(Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow

Sleep and the Sin of Unbelief

Like most people, I like the days when I wake up refreshed and ready to face the world. It is even better, when I can get good exercise in the morning.
The problem is, I don't do this often at all. In fact, I don't think I am a morning person, my alarm is often set to 6.30am, but usually the last thing I want to do is get up. There is two sides to this coin, the other side is when I go to sleep. This for me is completely unpredictable except it is usually later - say around 11pm - 2am. However, being aware of the correlation between waking up early, being productive and success, it will be a good thing to operate this way, rise early & exercise often.

Read an interesting solution yesterday, that I decided to practice today. The basic idea is - go to sleep when your body tells you it is time to sleep i.e. you can't read more than 2 pages without being distracted, however, wake up at the same time every morning and without given your mind to consider, going back to sleep, start stretching or doing light exercise.

Sounds interesting, so today, I am giving it a try, the sleep part was easy I was asleep about 5 minutes from deciding it is time to sleep, the wake up part was harder, but stretching and doing some light workout with weights. Made it to work, but by gosh feel like coffee is the only way, I am going to stay awake. Thank God for free Starbucks Coffee!

    Sin of Unbelief
This is the story of Jesus healing the lame man. When Jesus ask the dude, will you like to get well?, he said,"I can't sir, for I have no one to get me into the pool, once the water is stirred"
Classic excuse, a lot of people, myself included sometimes is like this guy. We just look at the difficulty of whatever the situation is and we often let it rub us of positivity.
Jesus decided to heal the guy anyways, but what he said to him is particularly interesting - "Stand up, pick up your mat and walk!". And when Jesus saw him again he also said " Now you are well, stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you"
I don't think the chaps sin is generic sin, for one he is paralyzed so there is only so much sin he could commit, lying there. However, the critical thing here is that it is not "sin" nature, but the fact that the has unbelief in his mind. And the admonition is for him no to have unbelief anymore.

Prayer: Lord forgive us for the sin of unbelief, teach us to love and serve you and I will serve you all the days of my life.

what if you have 6 months to live

Some people say live everyday as if it is your last day.
I simply ask, what if you have 6 more months left on this planet, what would you do?

    Me?
    I'll take care of heaven
I'll take care of my family - 2 weeks trip to Naija to say good bye to everyone
I will go to work and pretty much do the same things I am doing now.
Crazy? But really why change anything...

    Spring Time in Seattle

Spring time is really beautiful in the pacific northwest. Everything from the foliage coming out exposes the beauty of the flora and the fauna of this area.
In addition, it is baseball season, time for bratwurst and beer in the biergarten before entering the stadium for more bratwurst and beer.
It is the season that the outdoorsy northwest gets outdoor - yes a few stragglers still managed to jog through the winter. However, now, in the springtime, everyone is outside.
    It is simply beautiful.

Although this is shaping up to be a notoriously busy spring, I think it is time I start to think of how I am going to enjoy this spring and summer, and shake away that winter fog.

    Catch up Night

Both my fav sundays shows have recap nights tonight - Brothers and Sisters and Desperate Housewives. Hmnn, maybe I will not have the time to watch this time around.
We all need to have this time in our life, where we recap? Why do we do what we do? Why do I watch desperate housewives?
And smile, remember the good times and the bad times, the memories. Wake up and smell the roses...
